The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madras conducted a one-hour Peace Education Session for 25 students at Saai Balamandhir Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai.
The session was arranged through the kind initiative of Mr. Anantharaman (Retd. IOB Manager), whose support made this programme possible.
The session began with an interactive discussion on peace at home. Students shared how peace can be practised with parents and siblings through love, respect, patience, and understanding. The discussion then extended to peace in the classroom, where students reflected on how their behaviour influences a positive learning environment. The children actively participated throughout the session, eagerly sharing their ideas and experiences.
Ms. Indhumathi introduced the Six Peace Rules through practical examples and student interaction. The discussion focused on how these simple practices can help students avoid gossiping, accept situations they cannot change without blaming others or nature, accept their mistakes with humility, and apologise sincerely when they are wrong. Students related these ideas to their own daily experiences, making the learning meaningful and practical.
Dr. S. Kulandaisamy narrated the true story behind Mahatma Gandhi’s simple clothing, explaining why Gandhi chose to dress in the same simple manner as millions of poor people in India. He emphasised that Gandhi believed a leader should live like the people he serves and practise the values he teaches. This real-life story helped students understand the importance of empathy, simplicity, and leading by example.
The session encouraged students to express themselves freely, ask questions, and learn from one another in a joyful and interactive environment. By connecting Gandhian values with everyday situations at home and school, the programme inspired students to develop self-awareness and practise peaceful living in their daily lives.
The programme concluded with the distribution of the “Gandhian Lifestyle for a Peaceful World” poster to all students, encouraging them to continue reflecting on and practising these values with their families, friends, and teachers.
