Date: 16 July 2026 Duration: 2 Hours (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon) Venue: D.S. Karthikeya Raja Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai Participants: 85 Students Resource Persons: Dr. S. Kulandaisamy & Ms. Indhumathi
The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madras conducted a two-hour Peace Education Session for 85 students at D.S. Karthikeya Raja Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai as part of its ongoing mission to promote peace education based on Gandhian values.
The session was arranged through the kind initiative of Mr. Anantharaman (Retd. IOB Manager), whose support made this programme possible.
The session commenced with an interactive conversation on “What is Happiness?” Students eagerly shared their thoughts and experiences, and the discussion gradually progressed to “What is Peace?” Through this activity, students realised that peace begins within each individual and is reflected in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Ms. Indhumathi introduced the Six Peace Rules through examples and interactive participation. Rather than simply listening, students practised the rules throughout the session by listening attentively, raising their hands before speaking, waiting patiently for their turn, and respecting one another’s opinions. This experiential approach helped students understand how peaceful behaviour can be practised in everyday life.
Dr. S. Kulandaisamy narrated the “Copiyan” story, encouraging students to think independently and recognise that copying limits creativity and original thinking. He also shared simple practices that promote self-awareness and discipline, including maintaining proper posture while sitting. By sitting on the floor along with the students, he created a friendly and inclusive learning atmosphere where every child felt comfortable participating.
During the session, Dr. Kulandaisamy highlighted Mahatma Gandhi’s principle that teachers should practise what they teach, inspiring students to understand that actions are more powerful than words.
A unique feature of the programme was the “Gandhian Lifestyle for a Peaceful World” poster activity. Students worked in groups and confidently explained important Gandhian concepts such as Be the Change, One Step is Enough, Truth and Non-violence, and Dignity of Labour. The activity transformed the students into teachers, encouraging peer learning, confidence, and active participation.
At the conclusion of the session, each student received the “Gandhian Lifestyle for a Peaceful World” poster to continue reflecting on and practising Gandhian values in their daily lives.
