Children Can Teach Gandhi Better Than We Can!

Who teaches Mathematics? The Mathematics teacher. Who teaches Science? The Science teacher. But who teaches Gandhian values?

Our experience has shown that children themselves become the best teachers of Gandhian thought.

We conducted a simple experiment. We gave children a colourful poster containing twelve Gandhian concepts and explained only the difficult words. The children then interpreted the ideas in their own way. The results were remarkable.

A Class V student explained “Means and Ends” by describing how her father crossed a traffic signal against the rules to drop her at school on time. She realised that although the goal was good, the method was wrong. She concluded that if wrong means are accepted for a good purpose, students may later justify copying in examinations for good marks. Her conclusion was simple yet profound: Pure ends require pure means.

Likewise, when children understood Sarvodaya as “the welfare of all,” they naturally explained that when everyone benefits, they too benefit. They quickly realised that “We” is greater than “I.”

These experiences convinced us that Gandhian values are not merely lessons to be memorised; they are truths that children intuitively understand. In many ways, children become the teachers of adults.

The Peace Ambassador Project

Based on these experiences, the Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madras has launched the Peace Ambassador Project.

The project is simple:

• Understand the twelve Gandhian concepts through the illustrated poster.
• Explain these concepts to 10–15 children in your neighbourhood.
• Encourage discussion and independent thinking.
• Record a 3-minute video of the session.
• Send the video and a brief report to gpfchennai@gmail.com.
• After review, participants will receive an online “Peace Ambassador” Certificate.

The twelve concepts are:

1. Sarvodaya – Welfare of All
2. Means and Ends
3. Duties and Rights
4. Be the Change
5. One Small Step Is Enough
6. Truth and Non-violence
7. Dignity of Labour
8. Trusteeship
9. Social Equity and Justice
10. Economy of Permanence
11. Self-Restraint, Self-Reliance and Swaraj
12. Constructive Programme and Nation Building

Gandhiji believed that character and values must be nurtured from childhood. Our experience confirms this.

Children do not merely learn Gandhian values—they joyfully teach them to others.

The activity takes only about one hour. The impact can last a lifetime.

குழந்தைகளே காந்தியைக் கற்பிக்கும் ஆசிரியர்கள்!

கணக்கை கணக்கு ஆசிரியர் கற்பிக்கிறார். அறிவியலை அறிவியல் ஆசிரியர் கற்பிக்கிறார். மொழிகளை மொழி ஆசிரியர் கற்பிக்கிறார். ஆனால் காந்தியச் சிந்தனைகளை யார் கற்பிப்பார்கள்?

எங்களுடைய அனுபவத்தில், குழந்தைகளே காந்தியச் சிந்தனைகளின் சிறந்த ஆசிரியர்களாக மாறுகிறார்கள்.

நாங்கள் ஒரு சிறிய சோதனை செய்தோம். காந்தியத்தின் 12 முக்கியக் கருத்துகளை வண்ணப்படங்களுடன் குழந்தைகளிடம் கொடுத்து, புரியாத சில சொற்களுக்கு மட்டும் விளக்கம் அளித்தோம். அதன் பிறகு அந்தக் கருத்துகளை அவர்களே தங்கள் அனுபவங்களுடன் விளக்குமாறு கேட்டுக் கொண்டோம்.

முடிவு ஆச்சரியமாக இருந்தது.

ஐந்தாம் வகுப்பு மாணவி ஒருவர் “வழிமுறையும் குறிக்கோளும்” என்ற கருத்தை விளக்கும்போது, தனது தந்தை சாலையில் சிவப்பு விளக்கை மீறி, தன்னை நேரத்திற்கு பள்ளியில் சேர்ப்பதை எடுத்துக்காட்டாகக் கூறினாள்.

“நல்ல குறிக்கோளை அடைய தவறான வழிமுறையைப் பயன்படுத்தினால், நாளை நான் தேர்வில் காப்பியடித்தும் நல்ல மதிப்பெண் பெறலாம் என்று நினைத்துவிடுவேன்” என்றாள். இறுதியில், “தூய குறிக்கோளை அடைய தூய வழிமுறைகளே அவசியம்” என்று அழகாக முடிவுசெய்தாள்.

அதேபோல், “சர்வோதயம் – எல்லோருக்கும் நன்மை” என்ற கருத்தை விளக்கிய குழந்தைகள், “எல்லோருக்கும் நன்மை கிடைத்தால், எனக்கும் நன்மை கிடைக்கும். ‘நான்’ என்பதைவிட ‘நாம்’ என்பதே

முக்கியம்” என்று தாங்களாகவே கூறினர்.

இந்த அனுபவங்கள், காந்தியக் கருத்துகள் குழந்தைகளுக்கு இயல்பாகவே புரிகின்றன என்பதை எங்களுக்கு உணர்த்தின. பல நேரங்களில், குழந்தைகளே பெரியவர்களுக்கு ஆசிரியர்களாக மாறுகிறார்கள்.

‘அமைதிக்கான தூதுவர்’ திட்டம்

இந்த அனுபவத்தின் அடிப்படையில், காந்தி அமைதி நிறுவனம், சென்னை, “அமைதிக்கான தூதுவர்” (Peace Ambassador) திட்டத்தை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

திட்டம் மிகவும் எளிமையானது:

• காந்தியத்தின் 12 முக்கியக் கருத்துகளை புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.
• அவற்றை தங்கள் பகுதியில் உள்ள 10 முதல் 15 குழந்தைகளுக்கு விளக்கிச் சொல்ல வேண்டும்.
• அவர்களுடன் கலந்துரையாட வேண்டும்.
• அந்த நிகழ்வை 3 நிமிட வீடியோவாக பதிவு செய்ய வேண்டும்.
• வீடியோவையும், ஒரு சிறு அறிக்கையையும் gpfchennai@gmail.com என்ற மின்னஞ்சலுக்கு அனுப்ப வேண்டும்.
• ஆய்வுக்குப் பிறகு, “Peace Ambassador” (அமைதிக்கான தூதுவர்) என்ற ஆன்லைன் பாராட்டுச் சான்றிதழ் வழங்கப்படும்.

காந்தியத்தின் 12 முக்கியக் கருத்துகள்:

1. சர்வோதயம் – எல்லோருக்கும் நன்மை
2. வழிமுறையும் குறிக்கோளும்
3. கடமையும் உரிமையும்
4. நானே மாற்றத்தின் தொடக்கம்
5. ஒரு சிறிய செயல் போதும்
6. சத்தியமும் அகிம்சையும்
7. உடல் உழைப்பின் மேன்மை
8. அறங்காவலர் முறை (Trusteeship)
9. சமூக சமத்துவமும் நீதியும்
10. நிலைத்த பொருளாதாரம்
11. சுயக்கட்டுப்பாடு, சுயசார்பு மற்றும் சுவராஜ்
12. நிர்மாணத் திட்டங்களும் நாட்டை உருவாக்குதலும்

காந்தியடிகள், “ஒழுக்கக் கல்வியை குழந்தைப் பருவத்திலேயே தொடங்க வேண்டும்” என்று வலியுறுத்தினார். எங்களுடைய அனுபவமும் அதையே உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறது.

குழந்தைகள் காந்தியக் கருத்துகளைக் கற்றுக்கொள்வது மட்டுமல்ல; மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் மற்றவர்களுக்கும் கற்றுத்தருகிறார்கள்.

செயல் மிகவும் எளிது. விளைவோ அளவிட முடியாதது.

பதிவு செய்து கொள்ளும் அனைவருக்கும், திட்ட விளக்கத்துடன் 12 காந்தியக் கருத்துகள் அடங்கிய வண்ணப் போஸ்டர் ஆன்லைன் மூலம் அனுப்பி வைக்கப்படும்.
